NREC is part of the fabric of Pittsburgh’s
historic Lawrenceville neighborhood. Its founding in a long-shuttered
factory helped launch Lawrenceville’s revitalization. NREC
is proud to be a member of this community and works closely
with organizations like the Lawrenceville
Corporation to lend a hand in the neighborhood.
Riverfront and Trail Improvements
NREC’s done a lot to improve nearby trail and
riverfront amenities. It joined with the City
of Pittsburgh to put in the river trail from 40th to
43rd street, along with the picnic area at 40th street,
and helps to maintain both. NREC also teamed up with
the Friends
of the Riverfront to build a kayak/canoe launch
beneath the 40th Street Bridge, and the Allegheny
Valley Railroad to build a parking lot at the 40th
street trailhead.

FIRST LEGO League Tournaments
It’s game day excitement at the NREC Robotics
Academy’s annual FIRST
LEGO League tournament! Over a thousand middle-school
students, coaches, and parents attend this popular
educational super-event each year.
Educational Outreach
NREC’s community outreach goes beyond
its neighborhood. NREC sponsors and supports
educational outreach through camps, tours,
classes, teacher training, and more.
FIRST Robotics Team Sponsorship
NREC and the Homewood-Brushton YWCA sponsored
a high school FIRST
Robotics team. The “Smart and Sassy
Mechanics” made it to the semi-finals
of FIRST’s Pittsburgh
regional tournament in March, 2007. Not
bad for a bunch of newbies!
Additional Community Activities
NREC support vehicles have been a fixture
in Oakmont’s Memorial Day parade for
the past couple of years. Three
cheers for the red, white and blue!
