NREC created its first humanoid robot from scratch in a year. The design process (above) limited system integration and testing time. CHIMP won $1 million in funding by finishing second in the DARPA DRC Trials Track A competition (for teams which built as well as programmed their robots), competing against robots which in some cases had been built by teams with decades of experience in humanoid robotics.

||System Integration & Testing
NREC’s projects integrate mechanical systems, electronics, and software. We start with field-proven architectures before designing and building individual components. We use state-of-the-art design, simulation, and analysis tools to analyze and refine our designs before fabricating components in our sophisticated, on-site machine shops and electronics lab. We test components individually and in tandem to see how they interact, allowing us to find and fix problems before assembling our systems. See, for example, our UGV Systems Integration Lab.
We then test our systems under the most realistic conditions possible. We field test early and often, usually until our systems break! This rigorous testing gives us feedback on our designs and identifies performance and reliability limits that drive the next engineering cycle. The final result is a robust and capable system that’s ready for commercialization.
