Ambassadors from 34 countries visit NREC

The National Robotics Engineering Center on May 23 hosted ambassadors hailing from over 34 countries who were participating in the U.S. State Department’s Experience America program. This program takes foreign diplomats outside of the nation’s capital to get a look at the “real” America, learn about various regional cultures, and discover what these areas can offer the world in terms of trade.

CMU Provost Farnam Jahanian, NREC Director Herman Herman and Robotics Prof. Illah Nourbakhsh addressed the delegation during the morning visit. Attendees participated in a panel discussion on the Power of Robotics for Global Innovation and Development and how robotics technology developed at NREC impacts the economy, education and humanitarian activities around the world. The diplomats met with CHIMP, NREC's humanoid robot, and saw the latest robotics developments in agriculture, landmine localization, aircraft coating removal, and educational outreach via the Girls of Steel.
